Photography Tips for Winter 2017
Winter 2017 is here, and, for photographers, what better time to expand your portfolio than in Winter. The ground, covered in white, gives everything even the mundane a new perspective after a year, and in turn an excellent opportunity for the photographer to take that unique shot. You are, however, bound to encounter challenges that you otherwise wouldn't in other seasons. Here are a couple of tips that might come in handy for more productive photo sessions throughout winter.

Exposure Fix

The right exposure may be hard to achieve in winter. The calibration of a camera system bases exposure on neutral tones or neutral grey but in winter, the most dominant influence tends to come from snow-covered buildings and landscapes. You might end up with dull and grey tones if you rely only on the camera's meter for setting the exposure. To solve this problem, you can use the (Overexposure) positive compensation. A +1 value helps in an overcast or shady scene, while you might want to take it up a notch to a +2 in brightly lit snowy conditions.

Excellent filters to use in Winter Photography

The Polarizer is one filter that works great on every shot. It adds definitions to clouds, as well as improving the clouds' definition; it's an excellent tool that also darkens blue skies, adds saturation to colors and minimizes glare. To avoid over polarization, take many frames of your scene and thus try out with different polarization levels to find one that suits. Another filter type that can prove pretty useful is the neutral-density filters that equalize the exposure variations in different parts of a scene, such as a background and a foreground. A no.8 gray graduated screen works best for this category in winter. Another filter type you can find helpful in winter scenes is a warming filter. You can neutralize the shade's bluishness cast by the snow on a sunny day. Using the white balance set at "Shade" will achieve a similar effect. You might have two types of filters. Those you screw straight to the lens and those you slide straight into a holder. For Winter, as you fumble around with those heavy gloves, you may find the latter to be more preferable.

Focus Problems

Autofocus may be difficult for your camera to achieve on foggy, overcast or snowfall days, as there is nothing with enough contrast for the lens to focus. Other times, the lens would focus on the falling snow rather than your main subject. If this happens, it's best to use the manual focus over the autofocus. For manual focus, just hold your shutter button halfway then as soon as you attain concentration, your focusing points will light up, and then you are good to go.

Take the step

Although winter will pose several challenges to your photography eye, don't let them stop you. If you take advantage of the tips above, you will exploit the opportunities to catch memorable, breathtaking photos.
